Beyond postpartum depression: posttraumatic stress-depressive response following childbirth.

Peritraumatic dissociation in childbirth-evoked posttraumatic stress and postpartum mental health.

Thiel F, Dekel S.  Arch Womens Ment Health. 2019 May 21.

Peritraumatic dissociation predicted PP-PTSD above and beyond premorbid and other childbirth-related factors. In contrast, we found that when controlling for PP-PTSD symptoms, higher levels of peritraumatic dissociation were associated with lower depression and other psychiatric symptom severity.

Dekel S, Ein-Dor T, Berman Z, Barsoumian IS, Agarwal S, Pitman RK.  Arch Womens Ment Health. 2019 Apr 30.

Women who underwent unplanned cesarean also had higher levels of childbirth-related PTSD symptoms excluding those with vaginal instrumental.

Effect of prenatal mindfulness training on depressive symptom severity through 18-months postpartum: A latent profile analysis.

Felder JN, Roubinov D, Bush NR, Coleman-Phox K, Vieten C, Laraia B, Adler NE, Epel E.  J Clin Psychol. 2018 Jul;74(7):1117-1125.

Three depressive symptom severity profiles emerged: none/minimal, mild, and moderate. Adjusting for relevant covariates, women receiving prenatal mindfulness treatment were less likely than treatment as usual participants to be in the moderate profile than the none/minimal profile (OR = 0.13, 95% CI = 0.03-0.54, p = .005).

PERINATAL SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS

Educational achievement at age 9.5 years of children born to mothers maintained on methadone during pregnancy.

Lee SJ, Woodward LJ, Henderson JMT.  PLoS One. 2019 Oct 10;14(10):

Children born to opioid-dependent women enrolled in methadone maintenance are at high risk of educational delay by age 9.5 years.  Methadone-exposed children had increased odds of educational delay, but this was only marginally significant (OR = 3.62, [1.01-13.01], p = .049).

Drug screening during pregnancy: Urine dip cups measure up.

Kroska EB, Meller EW, Doyle R, Coker JL, Knight BT, Ray-Griffith SL, Nembhard WN, Stowe ZN.  Drug Alcohol Depend. 2019 Aug 30;204:107461

The dip cup had comparable detection of amphetamines, barbiturates, cocaine, methadone, opiates, and tetrahydrocannabinol to the university hospital laboratory with the exception of benzodiazepines. In addition, the dip cup detected use of buprenorphine (a commonly misused opiate receptor ligand not included in the hospital screen) and was significantly less expensive.
