Last month, the first article listed below focused on the risk of autism in children exposed to antidepressants during pregnancy.  It generated a great deal of media buzz, and probably a fair amount of unnecessary anxiety among women and their care providers.

The media seemed to miss out on the second article listed below, which was an important study because it attempted to parse out the risks associated with antidepressant exposure from the risks associated with untreated illness.  In that study, it appears that treatment with antidepressants was associated with better pregnancy outcomes (i.e., reduced risk of preterm birth) and that untreated depression was associated with worse outcomes.  That’s important news.
