Yiwen Zhang is a senior at Boston University studying biomedical and electrical engineering and has been elected to the Tau Beta Pi Honor Society. She volunteered in the psychiatric therapy clinic and aspired to quantify and discover novel techniques for the early detection of mental disorders. During the summer, she developed low-cost, high-sensitivity, and high-specificity diagnostic Paraneoplastic Syndrome strips. At BU, she engaged in human subject research focused on developing a non-invasive neuroimaging modality – functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) – for real-time monitoring of the hemodynamic response. She is currently optimizing the multi-model integration of the EEG-fNIRS system to investigate neural dynamics during sleep. At MGH, she assists the National Pregnancy Registry for Psychiatric Medications. In the future, she hopes to attend medical school and conduct research in neural engineering.
