The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has made a significant change to its recommendations for optimal postpartum care.  Previously, ACOG has recommended that women receive a single, comprehensive postpartum visit within the first 6 weeks after giving birth.

In a new Committee Opinion, published online in Obstetrics & Gynecology, ACOG has made a significant change in its recommendations: “All women should ideally have contact with a maternal care provider within the first 3 weeks postpartum. This initial assessment should be followed up with ongoing care as needed, concluding with a comprehensive postpartum visit no later than 12 weeks after birth.”

With regard to mental health issues, this shift may have profound effects in terms of increasing the identification of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and ensuring that women receive appropriate treatment.
